About Our Site

Baron Byng High School, was the alma mater of generations of Jewish, Greek and other immigrant kids in Montreal, many of whom went on to excel in numerous fields.

The website baronbynghighschool.ca (Baron Byng High School Museum) was created to preserve its history and capture its spirit (“The Spirit of Byng”) for generations to come.

In the summer of 2011, a group of Baron Byng High School (BBHS) alumni during a class of 60 reunion first came up with the idea of creating a museum about their cherished and famous school to keep the spirit of “Byng” alive.

Thousands of students who attended Baron Byng from 1922 to 1980 were blessed with some amazing and unique teachers. Among them was Anne Douglas Savage, Baron Byng’s first art teacher, whose career began when the school opened in 1922.

Physical Education was always an essential part of the school curriculum. Byng athletes consistently won ribbons, medals., and trophies for the school as well as achieving personal recognition at all levels of local, provincial and international competitions.

Fight To The End! …

During World War II many Baron Byng graduates interrupted their studies and career plans to serve in war.  Twenty nine made the ultimate sacrifice and others were decorated for their valiant efforts.

Music at Baron Byng

The Spirit of Byng was perhaps most evident in its exceptional music program. From 1922 to 1947 and beyond.  Dr. D.M. Herbert, the school’s much beloved music specialist, played a most significant role in its success.
