After graduating from BBHS, Melvyn Dobrin (born Dobrinsky) enlisted in the R.C.A.F. and served as a navigator, flying thirty-two missions during World War II. An accountant by profession, Dobrin served in numerous management positions at Steinberg Inc., becoming president in 1969. He succeeded Sam Steinberg, the company’s founder, as Chairman and CEO in 1978 and continued in this position until his retirement in 1989.
Dobrin has held numerous director positions on corporate and charitable boards. He was a long-time Director of Montreal Trust, Governor and member of the International Board of the Weizmann Institute of Science and served as President of the Montreal Chapter for over a decade. He chaired the Foundation for the YM-YWHA of the Montreal for 15 years. He was Director of the Montreal Heart Institute Research Fund and Director of the Canadian Council of Christians and Jews, Quebec Region. For six years he served as National President of Canada-Israel Bonds.
Along with his wife of 66 years, Mitzi Steinberg, Dobrin is a philanthropist and collector of Canadian Art, a keen golfer and world traveler. They have thee children, six grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren.
