Upon graduating BBHS, he obtained a BA in 1955 and his law degree in 1958,  both from McGill University. Upon entering graduate studies in the Faculty of Law at McGill, he was awarded the Chief Justice Greenshields Scholarship for outstanding students which allowed him to continue his studies at the Université de Lyon where he received a diplôme d’études comparatives de droit in 1959 and his Doctorate in 1960.

Goldstein is a leading member of Canada’s legal community and one of the most respected lawyers in Canada. He is the only Canadian lawyer to have been elected a Fellow of both the American College of Bankruptcy and the American College of Trial Lawyers.

Throughout his distinguished career, Goldstein has been recognized across Canada and worldwide for his knowledge of insolvency, a subject about which he has published and lectured extensively. In acknowledgement of his expertise in that field, Goldstein was appointed chair of the Federal Personal Insolvency Task Force, and special counsel to the Senate Standing Committee on Banking, Trade and Commerce (2001 – 2003). He was a senior and managing partner of the Montreal law firm, Goldstein, Flanz & Fishman.

In 2005, he was appointed to the Senate by the then Prime Minister Paul Martin and sat as a member of the Liberal caucus until his 75th birthday in 2009.  He is currently with McMillan LLP in Montreal as Senior Counsel.

Throughout his career Goldstein has been an active member of Canada’s Jewish community, and has served in numerous leadership positions in organizations such as Federation CJA, JNF, Montréal International, Fondation de la tolerance, Québec Press Council, Canadian Jewish Congress, Jewish Agency for Israel, among others. In 1998 he received the Bronfman Medal for Community Service, and is a member of and honorary legal counsel to various Boards of Directors of charitable organizations.
